Administrative / Biographical History

Maitland Mackie was born into a farming family in 1884, becoming grieve of one of his father's farms at the age of 20. He started farming North Ythsie, Aberdeenshire in 1906, and married Mary Yule the following year. In 1913 he rented Eastertown Fyfie and in 1916 bought the farm at Thomastown, Drumblade and in 1920, the farm of Eastertown. By 1939, he had given farms to his sons John and George, and to his daughters Jean and Mary. After WWII, he bought farms in Angus, including Ballinshoe, which he gave to his son George Yule Mackie. In 1920, Maitland Mackie was appointed Chairman of the Smallholders Society, and in 1931, Chairman of the National Farmers Union for Scotland. In 1941 he joined the governers of the North of Scotland College of Agriculture, becoming Chairman in 1947. He maintained his activities in farming through Maitland Mackie Ltd until his death in 1974.
