Scope and Content

Volume one comprises a catalogue of French engraved portraits, compiled by Thomas Dodd, arranged under the names of the engravers (16th-18th century, but mainly 17th and 18th century), with indexes of the engravers' names (folios 1, 3v-4) and of portraits (folios 169-194).

Volume two comprises a catalogue of the works of Marc Antonio Raimondi, interleaved with pages from William Young Ottley's publication, An inquiry into the origin and early history of engraving: upon copper and in wood, with an account of engravers and their works, from the invention of chalcography by Maso Finiguerra, to the time of Marc' Antonio Raimondi (London: printed for J. and A. Arch by J. M'Creery, 1816). The volume is prefaced: This Catalogue of the works of Marc Antonio Raimondi is that which belonged to Sir M[ark] M[asterman] Sykes and those notes which apply to some prints by this artist... are of his handwriting. With Eng MSS 1115 and 1116 were acquired An Essay on the Utility of Collection the Best Works of the Ancient Engravers of the Italian School: accompanied by a Critical Catalogue, by George Cumberland (London 1827, which contains many marginal criticisms and comments in Dodd's hand, and an interleved copy of pp. 771-836 (Jacomo Francia and Marc' Antionio Raimondi) of Ottley's An Inquiry onto the Origin and Early History of Engraving, vol. 2 (London 18160, with manuscript notes, particularly on Raimondi, by Dodd and the book collector Sir Mark Masterman Sykes (1771-1823).
