Scope and Content

This section comprises material relating to the first cryogenic superconducting NMR/ MRI scanner in Europe, the Picker 0.26 Tesla, installed in 1983, the IGE Vectra 0.5 Tesla, installed in 1991 and the Philips 1.5 Tesla and the Ian Isherwood Magnetic Resonance Imaging Centre, opened in 1997, along with some general material relating to NMR scanning which had been filed alongside it.

Administrative / Biographical History

Ian Isherwood presided over the acquisition and evaluation of the first cryogenic superconducting NMR scanner in Europe, and subsequent new and updated NMR scanners, in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Manchester, keeping Manchester at the forefront of research into the use and development of NMR imaging.
