Scope and Content

This series contains a small quantity of material generated by Strachan during his research and writing on modern French tapestry - an interest awakened by his visit to Jean Lurçat in 1952. He provided English captions for Pierre Vorms's 1957 publication, Tapisseries de Jean Lurçat, and wrote an article on 'Modern French and English tapestry' for Studio in 1955. He subsequently lectured on the subject over a long period, and the very last talk he gave - at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1990 - focused on Lurçat's tapestry. The material included here consists of manuscript and typescript notes and drafts (rough notes, drafts of talks, slide lists, and details of a proposed book on the subject of modern French tapestry), and a small quantity of correspondence.
