    • 7 volumes. Binding: half-bound in green morocco, marbled paper-covered boards.  Condition: Eng MSS 357 & 360: front board and spine detached; Eng MS 359: front board detached, head and tail of spine missing; Eng MS 361: tail of spine missing.

Scope and Content

A collection of autograph letters, sketches etc., of 392 artists, chiefly English of the nineteenth century, arranged alphabetically by name. Many contain portraits, engravings and drawings. The contents of the volumes are as follows:

  • I (Eng MS 356), A to B;
  • II (Eng MS 357), C to D;
  • III (Eng MS 358), E to G;
  • IV (Eng MS 359), H to K;
  • V (Eng MS 360), L to Phy;
  • VI (Eng MS 361), Pid to Sta;
  • VII (Eng MS 362), Ste to Y.

Artists represented include John Constable, George Cruikshank, Edward Henry Landseer, Frederic Leighton, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Joshua Reynolds, John Room (1802-1850, painter of Raffles' portrait), Sir David Wilkie, etc.
