Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics was one of the largest and most significant academic departments of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.
The department was originally known as the Department of Electrical Engineering [Electronics was added to the title in 1965], and was one of the few to be headed by a University-level professor, when the University of Manchester established its Faculty of Technology in 1905. The faculty was located at the Manchester Municipal School of Technology, which was owned by the City Council. The Council was responsible for all non-University courses at the School. The School became the Manchester College of Science and Technology, and UMIST in 1965.
In 2004 the Department became the School of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, part of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, within the new University of Manchester.
