Students' Lecture Notes Collection

Scope and Content

The Students Lecture Notes collection is artificial collection comprising lecture notebooks of former students of the University of Manchester and UMIST.

The notebooks record lectures in a number of subject areas including chemistry, engineering, history medicine, law, physics, English, etc.

The lecture notebooks vary in content, detail and completeness, according to the compiler and the subject area. Some provide an almost verbatim account of lectures, others are more cursory.

The collection includes some lecture notes of non-degree students of the Manchester Municipal School of Technology, which became Manchester College of Science and Technology in 1956, and UMIST in 1965.

The lecture notebooks have been assembled to provide background information on modes of student learning, and methods of teaching and knowledge transfer. In some cases, they may provide additional information on the lecturer delivering the lectures. Typically, these are areas where documentation of activity can be difficult, and lecture notes provide one means of understanding how subjects were taught at the University.
