Robert Newton

Four volumes of early 20th century lecture notes on midwifery and gynaecology, all once believed to have formed part of the collection of Dr Robert Newton.

Robert Newton (1904-1969) was born in Manchester on 24 May 1904 and graduated MB ChB from the University of Manchester in 1927. In 1933 he received the MD and went on to hold roles at both the Manchester Royal Infirmary and St Mary's Hospital before eventually becoming a consultant obstetric and gynaecological surgeon at St Mary's Hospital. He was known more for his practical skills and clinical ability than for research but was also acknowledged as a good teacher. Newton became a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1934 before becoming a fellow in 1947 where he served on the Hospital Recognition and Examination Committees and as chairman of the Hospital Recognition Committee. He was also a member of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society. Newton died quite suddenly at his home on 24 June 1969 only a few months after he retired.
