Scope and Content

Includes: GLU/4/4 copy letter, 3 May 1962, Gluckman discusses Firth's paper on a history of anthropology, including his interpretation of Malinowski's views on social change, and comments on Gluckman's views of Malinowski. Also includes two copies of a typescript "The study of law" by Gluckman (GLU/4/12, 13). A number of items also deal with routine business of the Association of Social Anthropologists and the Social Studies Sub-committee of the UGC.

Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Raymond Firth (1901-2002) was professor of anthropology at the London School of Economics (in succession to Bronislaw Malinowski) from 1944 to 1968. Influenced by Malinowski and Radcliffe-Brown, Firth was particularly noted for his studies of the social system of Tikopia.
