(Arnold Leonard) "Bill" Epstein (1924-1999) worked at the Economic Research Section, University of Manchester in 1951-1952, 1957 and was a Simon Research Fellow at the University in 1957-1958. He was a lecturer in the department of social anthropology, University of Manchester from 1961-1964, and senior lecturer from 1964-1966. He then became a professorial fellow in the department of anthropology and sociology, Australian National University, Canberra from 1966-70, and full professor from 1970-72. From 1972-1982 he was professor of social anthropology at the School of African and Asian Studies, Sussex University.

A manuscript by Epstein on the Tolai is kept at the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland (Ms 352).
