Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Kirkintilloch branch of the British Women's Temperance Association was formed at a meeting on 29 December 1890. The first president of the branch was Mrs Roberton of Fairfield House. By 1916 there were nearly 400 members. The work of the branch committee involved visiting members in the various districts of the town and organising four social gatherings per year. Members of the BWTA took a pledge to abstain from intoxicating drink and to try to induce others to do the same.
