Administrative / Biographical History

William Evans ('Wil Ifan o Fôn') (1876-1952), antiquarian, poet and sewing machine agent, was from Pentraeth, Red Wharf Bay, Anglesey. After serving overseas in the Army, he returned to Pentraeth, working as a stonemason. He researched the history of the bardic tradition of Wales and the Druids, publishing many books, including Bonedd y Cymry (Llangefni, [1916]) and Bards of the Island of Britain (Red Wharf Bay, Anglesey, 1930), and many articles, in which he argued that there was a real continuity of the tradition from the Druids, and as a result became involved in controversies with those who held that the modern Gorsedd was essentially an invention of Iolo Morganwg. He created a Gorsedd circle in his garden.
