Administrative / Biographical History

James Bethea served as Commanding Officer of McCloskey General Hospital from 1942-1946. A career army physician, he was transferred there from Brooke Army Hospital in Fort Sam Houston, where he served as Chief Surgical of Services from 1940 to 1942. Bethea was a Colonel of the United States Army in 1942 and was promoted to Brigadier General in 1943.
McCloskey General Hospital was opened in 1942 as an army hospital.

The archive was gifted to the Borthwick Institute by the family of Brigadier General Bethea.
