Field notebook, purchased by Alexander Carmichael in Cornwall on 30 November 1864. Carmichael used the notebook between December 1865 and May 1867 during his travels throughout the Hebrides to record folklore, including Fenian ballads, narratives, songs, and anecdotes; local customs; vocabulary; historical notes; and antiquarian, topographical and archaeological observations. It includes material collected from Skye, Lewis, Barra, Benbecula, Mingulay and Vatersay. Loose sheets inserted into the back of the notebook appear to relate to Carmichael's trip to Lewis in October 1873.
