Administrative / Biographical History

Purchased by Finlays in partnership with Taylor Woodrow Construction Ltd, an Aberdeen based oil service company providing technological manufacturing support and services to the offshore oil industry. Based in Aberdeen, Seaforth was a major designer and manufacturer of saturation diving systems. At the time this was the largest diving system in the world and constructed for Shell Expro MSV. (Cited from GB 248 UGD 091/1/9/3/7).

Sir James Hann became chief executive of Seaforth Maritime in 1972. He was selcted by the chairman Sir Ian Noble, and backed by the Bank of Scotland and Sir Colin Campbell, the chairman of James Finlays. The original brief was for a Scottish company to build and manage four ships to operate in the UK sector. However the company became one of the UK's foremost offshore servicing and contracting companies, supplying commodities, from cement and drill pipes to fuel and fresh water. Other Seabases followed, notably in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. In 1977, within five years of the foundation of Seaforth Maritime, Hann was made CBE for services to the offshore industry.
