Administrative / Biographical History

In 1889 the Charity Commission issued a scheme to administer the proceeds from the sale of the former Queen Street British School, Swansea, under the new name of the Joseph Lancaster Exhibitions. The charity was to provide for girls to train as teachers at a professional or technical institution and was to be administered by trustees appointed by the Swansea School Board, the British and Foreign School Society. and the management committee of Swansea Training College. In 1915 the Board of Education amended the scheme so that the trustees were nominated by the local education authority (then Swansea Borough), and the British and Foreign School Society.
