Scope and Content

Papers and collected items belonging to Frederick and Mary Sayers and primarily relating to the Second World War, including their wartime diaries, Frederick's memoirs, his service papers and certificates, and a number of artefacts collected by Frederick Sayers whilst on active duty.

Administrative / Biographical History

Frederick Arthur Sayers was born in Wallasey, then in Cheshire, in 1918. Prior to the Second World War he worked as a warehouseman, before joining the Royal Corps of Signals. After demobilisation, he worked as a civil servant in the Post Office, Customs and Excise and Transport. He died in 2000.

Mary Sayers was born in Salford in 1920. During the Second World War, she was an aircraft factory worker and a nursing auxiliary. Mary lived in Gorton, Manchester, and later in Failsworth, Greater Manchester, with her husband, Frederick. Mary Sayers died in 2022.

The collection was gifted by the family in 2022.

Custodial History

Photographs and memorabilia were collected by Frederick Sayers while on active service from discarded/abandoned German uniforms and equipment he encountered on his progress through France.
