Administrative / Biographical History

The Halifax Industrial Society Limited was established in Halifax, West Yorkshire, in 1850. Initially it was known as the Halifax Co-operative Trading Society, before swiftly changing its name to the Halifax Working Men's Co-operative and Provident Society, more usually known as the Halifax Working Men's Co-operative Society. The first President was John Swift and many early members seem to have been involved in the Chartist Movement. It is not known when the Society changed its name to the Halifax Industrial Society, but it was certainly known as such by the 1870s. In 1900 the Society published a history by M Blatchford to commemorate its Silver Jubilee. At some point between 1946 and 1950 the Society changed its name again, this time becoming the Halifax Co-operative Society Ltd.
