Administrative / Biographical History

Mr John Alexander Orr was born 14th Februaury 1914. He was educated at Hutchesons' Boys' Grammar School, Glasgow followed by Anderson's College of Medicine, St Mungo's College and the Glasgow Dental School. He was a consultant dental surgeon to the Glasgow Dental Hospital and School where he worked for 39 years and was a member of the Board of Management. In addition he held appointments in Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Stobhill hospital and was a honourary senior clinical lecturer in the University of Glasgow. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, where he served on the Dental Council and of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. He was also a Fellow of the British Assocaition of Oral Surgeons. He was a past President of the Odonto- Chirurgical Society of Scotland (1964-1965), West of Scotland Branch of the British Dental Association (1963-1964) and of the British Odontological Society (1958-59). He was well known as a pioneer of the dental care of haemophilia sufferers. He had many interests and was also an Elder of his local Parish church in Newton Mearns, a Captain of the 79th Company of the Boys' Brigade and a member of the Rotary Club.
