Administrative / Biographical History

Tristan da Cunha lies around 2,500 miles east of South America in the South Atlantic Ocean. Discovered by Europeans in 1506 it came under British sovereignty in 1816. The main settlement, Edinburgh was evacuated in 1961 due to a volcanic eruption, the population returned in 1962.
