Administrative / Biographical History

George Payne & Co Ltd, producers of tea, coffee, confectionery, and cocoa,  London, England, were established in  1896 . Initially, tea and coffee were the principal focus of the company, blending and packing products for all types of retail customers in  London. In  1899 ,  George Payne & Co Ltd entered into an agreement with  James Finaly & Co Ltd, textile manufacturers, tea planters, and merchants,  Glasgow, Scotland, whereby  James Finlay & Co Ltd acted as agents for  George Payne & Co Ltd, and bought shares in the company. In the early twentieth century the company expanded into new products with the production of cocoa in  1905 , and in  1910  with the manufacture of chocolate. Chocolate and confectionery products became an increasing important part of the company's business in the new century, which allowed it to create a range of specialist products. In  1998 ,  George Payne & Co Ltd was bought by  Northern Foods plc, producers of foodstuffs,  Hull, England. The company is still active in the food industry as a subsidiary of  Northern Foods plc.
