Co-operative Coal Federation Limited

Records of Co-operative Coal Federation including a letter book.

The Co-operative Coal Federation Limited was set up in 1891 following discussions between representatives of Greenfield Co-operative Society (near Oldham) and several other socities in the local area. The idea was to be a coal wholesaler to those societies on the same lines as the CWS. The main protagonist of the federation was Mr W Lawton of Greenfield Co-operative Society.

Represntatives from local societies met in September 1891 in Droylesden. 36 delegates attended from societies including Failsworth, Stalybridge, Hyde, Manchester and Salford, Uppermill and Diggle.Following the meeting several societies signed up to the federation including Stalybridge, Uppermill, Diggle, Manchester and Salford, Grasscroft, Greenfield, and Edgeworth. A second meeting was arranged for October at Stalybridge. Inbetween the two meetings rules were drafted and quotes were sought from local pits for the supply of coal.
