In the mid 1950s Gilbert Benthall had started to research the history of early art schools in London. By 1959, in a letter to Felix Leakey he writes that he has 'collected several volumes of notes and roughed out c 20000 words' on the subject. Three notebooks appear to have survived. The contents of the notebooks were eventually condensed into a 93 page typescript manuscript entitled 'Early Art Schools in London 1635-1770' (deposited at the V&A).
