Administrative / Biographical History

“The Illingworth Surgical Club was founded on the 16th July 1958 at a small and informal dinner given in Prof Illingworth’s honour at the RNVR Club headquarters in the Carrick on Clyde Street.

“The occasion for the dinner was the signal honour of his being elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and prior to his departure to the Antipodes as Visiting Professor.

“It had been in the minds of several of his pupils and colleagues for some times that, in view of the international recognition of Prof. Illingworth as a great man and, through him, the Glasgow School of Surgery as a great school, it behoved us to honour him in our own way.

“Accordingly, it was proposed by Mr Douglas H. Clark that those pupils who were interested in surgical research should form a travelling club and that this club should be named the Illingworth Surgical Club.”
