Records of Hull Community Council

Scope and Content

This small collection contains four diaries, kept by the Hull Community Council, providing handwritten, brief details of events hosted by institutes, societies, clubs and other organisations within Hull and the surrounding area, such as the University College of Hull. Events mentioned, for example, include dances, dinners, concerts, lectures, committee meetings, royal visits and school prize giving ceremonies.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Hull Community Council came into being at a meeting held in the Guildhall on 22 January 1931. Dr Ritchie Rodger was appointed as the first chairman. The Council was organised with an Executive Committee and three main sub-committees: Finance Committee, Social Service Committee and Social Survey Committee. The main objectives of the Hull Community Council were the organisation of a Citizens Advisory Service and the study of social conditions in Hull.

The Council did not provide relief itself but helped existing organisations improve or establish new services as well as putting people in touch with the organisations best suited to help them. The Community Council helped develop a Poor Man's Lawyer scheme, provide allotments for unemployed workers, help transfer tenants from congested areas of Hull to the new houses in the North Hull Estate, started Clubs for the Unemployed and opened centres for the wives of unemployed men as well as carrying out a social survey of Hull and other associated work.

The Community Council also kept a diary of social functions, the items in this collection are examples of these, to enable organisers of charity events to avoid clashing dates with other organisations.
