Alec Monteath Collection

Scope and Content

The Alec Monteath Collection consists of various different categories, divided into eleven sections. The main section is 'Performance Ephemera' relating to 'Macklin' (Monteath portrayed Charles Macklin on the stage) and 'Stage' includes costumes, scripts and stage make-up box from his theatre performances. Other materials relate to his time at the Garrick Club and on TV, including clothes, headshots and photographs most notably from Alec's time on the series 'Take the High Road'. There are various materials relating to theatre performances, mainly in Kilmarnock and Perth.

Administrative / Biographical History

Alexander William Monteath, born in Perthshire, Scotland in 1941, was both an actor and broadcaster. A graduate of the then RSAMD (now Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), he was best known for his portrayal as crofter Dougal Lachlan from 1980-1992 in the television programme 'Take the High Road'. Other notable acting roles included 'Witch Wood' and 'The Omega Factor'. Alec served as an announcer for both Scottish Television from 1964-1969 and also for BBC Scotland. Alec accompanied and stared in various theatrical productions including 'Macklin' and 'Babes in the Woods' He performed in a range of theatres, including Perth, his hometown, and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Alec passed away in March 2021 in Stirlingshire.
