Administrative / Biographical History

The firm of Connal & Bannatyne was founded in Glasgow in 1871, originating from the firm of Hugh Brown & Co, with whom its founding partners had both been connected for many years. The company originally manufactured hand embroidered infants' bibs, but later moved into children's clothing, catering for children aged from 6 months to 10 years. Their first factory was at 253 Argyle Street, Glasgow. Most of the work was carried out in the company's own premises, with some of the hand embroidery work being contracted to out-workers in Ayrshire and Ireland. By 1950 the firm had moved to 39 Buchan Street, Gorbals, Glasgow, and by 1956 to 45 Carlton House, Gorbals Lane, Glasgow. The company was incorporated as  Connal & Bannatyne Ltd in 1955. In 1968 they moved to a new factory on the banks of the River Clyde, at 45 Finnieston Street, Glasgow, which was visited by Princess Margaret on 6 June 1973. The company employed its own designers, and produced an Autumn/Winter and a Spring/Summer collection each year, principally for the mail order, multiple store, and specialist wholesalers market.
