Records of James Leaf of Naburn

Account book, including rent from and expenses for houses in York, 1883-1898; fishing records, 1907-1916; farm and fishing accounts, 1911-1941.

James Leaf was born in Naburn, Yorkshire, c.1842, the son of James Leaf, fisherman, and his wife Ann. Initially he followed the same occupation as his father. The 1861 and 1871 census record him as a fisherman, still unmarried and living at home.
In 1873 he married Mary Fawcett; their son James was born c.1875, followed by Jane c.1877, Mary c.1881 and Ann c.1882. In the 1881 census James was still described as a fisherman but by 1891 he was described as a self-employed fisherman and farmer, a status he maintained in 1901 and 1911.
James Leaf died in Naburn on the 28 November 1911, leaving his business to his son James Leaf Junior, described as a lock keeper in the 1901 census but by 1911 working as a salmon fisherman. In 1907 James had married Edith Mary Chapman. As of 1911 they had no children.
James Leaf Junior died in 1963 at the age of 88.
