Scope and Content

The collection comprises of correspondence with Apsley Cherry-Garrard by Barr and others regarding the penguin rookeries in Antarctica.

Administrative / Biographical History

Michel de Vaisseau Barr was leader of the French Expedition, 1950-1951, to the Antarctic. The expedition ship, Commandant Charcot, relieved the station at Port-Martin in Terre Adeli before making Hydrographic observations in the vicinity and a coastal reconnaissance westwards to longitude 138° East. The expedition visited Macquarie Island and Campbell Island in February. During the 1951 winter, the scientific work at Port-Martin was extended, particularly geophysics and biology, and the sledging programme was continued. Barr was appointed Chef de District de Dependances de Madagascar.
