Certificate of service for John William Todd as a Special Constable in the Metropolitan Police from 22 August 1914 to 8 February 1915; 1914-15 Star with ribbon , Meritorious Service Medal, inscribed "3270 SJT .J.W.TODD. 17 / SQ: R.F.C; British Victory Medal; British War Medal 1914-18; assorted lengths of medal ribbons including, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Burma Star; photographs of John William Todd in the Royal Flying Corps, 1915-1918 (3 envelopes); handwritten note and formula for making ant killer written by John William Todd 4 December 1943; certified copy of Attestation for Short Service in the British Army for John William Todd dated 23 January 1915 joining the Royal Flying Corps; typed copy of the entry in the London Gazette 13 February 1917 announcing the award of the Meritorious Service Medal to 3270 Sergt. Administrative / Biographical History

John William Todd was born on 31 July 1882 in Grantham. He served in the Royal Flying Corp during the First World War. He was married to Mary Magdalene Hourihan, and had one child, Maureen Patricia, who was born in 1925. By 1931 he was employed in the Engineering Department at Rowntrees & Co, and was living at 131 Fifth Avenue, Tang Hall, York. In 1935 he was seconded by Rowntrees to Wilson & Company in East London, Union of South Africa, to help them with chocolate research. Immediately before his departure he was working on the creation of what became the Aero bar for Rowntrees.

Mary Magdalene Hourihan was born on 11 August 1898 in Cork. She trained with the St John's Ambulance during the First World War, and then received qualifications in Mental Health Nursing in 1922. She married John William Todd. In 1925 she gave birth to a daughter, Maureen Partricia. In 1935 she sailed to South Africa following her husband's move from Rowntrees & Co to Wilson & Co.
