Professor W.A. Mackay (1906-1991), surgeon

William Arthur Mackay was born 1 October 1906 and educated at Ardrossan Academy and then at Glasgow University where he graduated MB, ChB in 1927. He became assistant to the Professor of Pathology at Glasgow University followed by assistant to the Regius Professor of Surgery. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps in Europe and Middle East with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was appointed to the St Mungo chair of surgery at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1953 where he developed cardiac surgery ranging from mitral valvotomies in the general surgical theatre to open heart surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass in a purpose-built unit. He died on 27 November 1991.
