Papers of Professor Thomas Edmund Jessop and Dora Jessop

Scope and Content

The collection consists mainly of Professor Jessop's research files, and notes and typescripts for publications. U DJP includes files on individual philosophers such as Aristotle, Plato and Socrates, and files on philosophical subjects such as the theory of knowledge, the history of ethics and the history of psychology. U DJP also includes administrative papers and teaching materials for the educational institutions and church organisations where Professor Jessop worked or ran courses, and notes, transcripts, drafts and typescripts for various papers and publications on George Berkeley. The last series within U DJP consists of the papers of Mrs Dora Jessop, and includes manuscript drafts and typescripts of her articles and poems [U DJP/43-54].

U DJP2 comprises typescripts of writings by Professor Jessop including 'The German Mind' and 'Pre-Sophistic Theories of Cognition', illustrations cut from booksellers' catalogues of 15th - 17th century works, and notes for writings and lectures on the British Empire, British institutions and philosophical and religious subjects. The last series contains miscellaneous personal items, including degree certificates, documents about Jessop's service as Special Constable for Glasgow, photographs, press cuttings and publishers' agreements.

Administrative / Biographical History

Thomas E Jessop (1896 - 1980) was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Hull, 1928-61 and his wife Dora (nee Stewart) lectured in English literature in the Department of Adult Education, as well as writing poetry and novels. Professor Jessop prepared a bibliography of Scottish philosophy (published in 1938), and edited a major series of the works of George Berkeley, Bishop of Cloyne (1685-1753), in collaboration with Arthur Luce. He researched and published mainly on questions of Christian ethics and doctrine. Before taking up his post at Hull, he wrote a small number of travel guides to Italy.
