Administrative / Biographical History
William Sillar was a native of Blantyre, Lanarkshire and was educated at Hamilton Academy and Glasgow University qualifying M.B., Ch.B. in1939. Shortly after qualification he joined the army. He was captured in France in 1941 and subsequently escaped across Europe to Gibraltar. He trained after the war with Sir Charles Illingworth and Professor Roland Barnes and in 1949 became the first orthopaedic surgeon in the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow. He developed a first class accident service and supervised the building of the country’s first custom-built accident unit. He was instrumental in the setting up of the Action for Disaster Fund which was aimed at promoting more knowledge and investigation into major accidents, their prevention and handling.
