Administrative / Biographical History

The records are relating to the Lliw Borough Council. A two-tier system was created by the Local Government Act 1972. Counties were controlling the major public services. In West Glamorgan there were four districts created: Swansea, Lliw Valley, Neath and Avan. Conurbations were able to petition for borough status under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972. The new distric councils of Lliw Valley, Neath and Afan became boroughs. The Borough of Lliw Valley was formed by the amalgamation of the Llwchwr Urban District and the Pontardawe Rural District. In 1996, district councils were abolished and unitary authorities were created. When in April 1996 the new local government boundaries came into force, the area of the former Lliw Valley Borough Council was split into two, broadly speaking down the middle of Rhyndwyclydach Community, and divided between the two new unitary authorities, the City and County of Swansea and the County Borough of Neath Port Talbot.
