Administrative / Biographical History

Swansea Local Health Board was established as a statutory body under the National Health Service Act 1977, Statutory Instrument 2002 in April 2003. The role of the Board is to develop and implement strategies which will improve the health of the population. Swansea Local Health Board has a responsibility to work closely with other organisations for example Social Services, the Hospital and Community Lives Consortium to make sure that plans are in place which will improve people's health, as well as the health services available in Swansea. The Local Health Board is responsible for co-ordinating health care services for the people in their area. This includes, making sure people know how to find information on doctors, dentists, pharmacists and optometrists in Swansea. They also work closely with the local hospitals to make sure that they provide a wide range of health services for the people of Swansea.
