References to school days, political events (the Miners' Strike), political and other leaders (Mrs. Margaret Thatcher, Roy Hattersley, Arthur Scargill), mutual friends (James Sutton, Noel Hughes), gardening, television, Hull University life, the Poet Laureateship (and the poets John Betjeman, Ted Hughes), 'Larkin at Sixty', 'Required Writing', and Colin Gunner's 'Adventures with the Irish Brigade'. The letter of 19 November 1973 includes the quatrain 'Prison for strikers'; that of 30 July includes the concealed quatrain 'I want to see them starving'
