The Castle Hotel, Neath, was built in 1695 and was a prominent coaching inn. The names Ship and Castle Inn and then Castle Inn were used in the establishment’s earlier days. A noteworthy event at the Hotel was the inaugural meeting of the Welsh Rugby Union on 12 March 1881. In the second decade of the 21st century The Castle Hotel continues to occupy a central place in the social life of Neath.
