Two years later, in 1959, he became Consultant Plastic Surgeon to the West of Scotland Plastic Surgery Unit which eventually moved to Canniesburn Hospital. He became its Director from 1980 until his retirement in 1986. Following the early death of his first wife, he married Mary Vint, a lecturer in histopathology at the University of Glasgow. Their combined work Cancer of the Face and Mouth was published in 1986. He was President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow 1984-1986 and the Hunterian Professor, Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1984.
