Mr Ian A. McGregor (1921-1998), plastic surgeon

Ian Alexander McGregor was born in Glasgow in 1921. He graduated MB ChB with commendation in 1944 from Glasgow University and the following year joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and served for three years in Eygpt, Palestine and Somaliland. On his return to the UK he spent a year as Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy at Glasgow University where he met the Senior Plastic Surgeon, Mr John Tough (d.1977) and was offered a Registrar post at the Burns Unit at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. In 1950 he married Christeen Mackay, a Sister in the Burns Unit and they had three sons, Alan, Alastair and Ian born in 1951, 1953 and 1956, respectively. In 1952 he became Senior Registrar in the West of Scotland Plastic Surgery Service in Ballochmyle and in 1955 he took part in an exchange visit to Cornell University Medical Centre in New York for six months. This visit proved to be the inspiration behind his book Fundamental Techniques in Plastic Surgery, first published in 1960. In 1957 he became Consultant in charge of the Casualty Department at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Two years later, in 1959, he became Consultant Plastic Surgeon to the West of Scotland Plastic Surgery Unit which eventually moved to Canniesburn Hospital. He became its Director from 1980 until his retirement in 1986. Following the early death of his first wife, he married Mary Vint, a lecturer in histopathology at the University of Glasgow. Their combined work Cancer of the Face and Mouth was published in 1986. He was President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow 1984-1986 and the Hunterian Professor, Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1984. He received the degree of Honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Glasgow in 1986. He died on 13 April 1998.
