Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Hector Cameron studied surgery under Lister at Glasgow and later became his house surgeon and ultimately his assistant. He was appointed visiting surgeon to the Royal Infirmary in 1873 and in 1881 became visiting surgeon to the Western Infirmary. He became Professor of Clinical Surgery at Glasgow University in 1900. His former assistants and house surgeons marked his retirement from the Clinical Chair by a dinner in December 1910. During the First World War, Sir Hector was Commissioner of the British Red Cross Society for the Western District of Scotland. He became a Fellow of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1878 and was elected President in 1897. He was knighted in 1900, the first President of the Faculty to be knighted while in office. He died in 1928.

Joshua Ferguson was Resident under Sir Hector Cameron at the Western Infirmary from 1895-1896. He was the author of Sir Hector’s Obituary notice in the Glasgow Medical Journal and in it he quotes from some of the letters in this collection.
