Scope and Content

The collection comprises of journals written by Keohane during the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 (leader Robert Falcon Scott).

Administrative / Biographical History

Patrick Keohane was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1879. He enlisted in the Royal Navy, reaching the rank of petty officer when he joined the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 (leader Robert Falcon Scott).

Taking part in many sledging journeys; he was a member of the support party that accompanied the polar party as far as the upper depot on the Beardmore Glacier in December 1911. Keohane remained at Cape Evans for a second winter, and was a member of the search party, led by Edward Atkinson, that found and buried the bodies of Scott, Wilson and Bowers in November 1912.

On retiring from the Navy, he returned to Ireland where he died on 30 August 1950.
