Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
John Mansel Thomas (1912-1979) was a founder-member of the Gower Society and its president in 1960. During the 1960s and 1970s he undertook a project to record the voices and memories of Gower people in preparation for the publication for a book, 'Yesterday's Gower', which used transcripts from the recordings to illustrate aspects of Gower's history. The book was completed and published posthumously by his widow, Gwendoline Thomas, in 1982. The recordings include examples of Gower dialect and accent. The tapes were digitised in-house at West Glamorgan Archives in 2011 and indexed 2013.
