Dr David McLean (1902 -1985) General Practitioner

Dr. David McLean was born in Tarbolton on 5th April 1902. He studied medicine at St Mungo’s and Anderson College, Glasgow, sitting his Triple Qualification examination in 1936. In 1939, he became a resident surgeon at the ear, nose and throat department of Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary, before joining the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1942. During his time in the RAMC, Dr. McLean, served as a staff surgeon in Cawnpore, India, from 1942 – 1946 where he was surgeon in charge of British military dairy farms. It was also during his time in India that he specialised in the study of venereal diseases, holding the position of Specialist in V.D. for India Command.

Dr McLean returned to Scotland in 1947 and, in 1950, he set up the Gilchrist & McLean practice in Glasgow with Dr. James Gilchrist, a former colleague at the Royal Infirmary. He continued to work as a General Practitioner at Gilchrist & McLean until his retirement in 1975.
