Original envelope had written: "Agreement 1889 Far East/New York." Copy of a handwritten memorandum of an agreement of trade between Gregor Gow, Wm Thomson & Co, Jenkins & Co, Adamson Bell & Co and Russell & Co "for the purpose of arranging the carrying trade between Japan, China and Hong Kong to New York for this year 1st May 1889 to 30th April 1890." The agreement refers to the Wm Thomson & Co ships as "Bens" and individually as "Ben steamer no X " with X being an individual number.
