Administrative / Biographical History

David Hamilton graduated MB ChB Glasgow in 1963 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Phsysicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1974. Before retiring he was a senior surgeon at the Transplant Unit of the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, Scotland and had also been the first Director of the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine at Glasgow University.

Mr Hamilton trained in organ transplantation with the Nobel Prize winner Sir Peter Medawar in London and later studied the history of medicine at Oxford University. In addition to his many conventional scientific publications, his medical historical works include the books The Healers - a History of Medicine in Scotland (1983) and the Monkey Gland Affair (1986) - an account of tissue transplantation in the 1930s. His full history of organ transplantation - Towards the Impossible will be published shortly.
