Administrative / Biographical History
The Central Land Board was established in 1947 to levy charges on new developments and to compensate other landowners for loss of development value occasioned by restrictions imposed by the Town and Country Planning Act of 1947. Compensation was limited to owners whose land was substantially affected by the Act and the total to be paid was fixed at £300 million. A subsequent Act of 1953 abolished both charges and compensation, although the board was not abolished till 1959. The files below relate to claims for compensation 1948-1955 for sites such as quarries, gravel extraction and clay pits.
