Administrative / Biographical History

The Tomintoul Glenlivet Distillery Ltd (company number: SC093694) was built in 1964-1965 by two Glasgow whisky broking firms, W & S Strong Ltd, and Hay & MacLeod Ltd in order to meet an increased demand for malt whisky. They chose Speyside and being impressed by the quality of the spring water at Tomintoul, selected a site near the Ballantruan Spring, on the east of the River Avon.

The new distillery was designed by Baxter Clark & Paul of Dundee to blend in with the landscape and was approved by the Royal Fine Art Commission. The building was planned to be as efficient and economic as possible, with efforts made to cut fuel consumption and save unnecessary handling of raw materials and the new whisky. A new warehouse design allowed casks to be stacked seven high by using a forklift truck. Building began in November 1964, and by May 1965 the equipment began to be installed and production commenced in July. It was the first distillery to be financed entirely by Scottish capital.

The company purchased Fettercairn distillery from Tom Scott Sutherland in 1971. In 1973 Tomintoul Glenlivet Distillery Ltd along with Fettercairn Distillery Ltd, W & S Strong Ltd, and Hay & MacLeod Ltd was acquired by SUITS (Scottish and Universal Investments Trust Ltd), the owners of whisky blenders Whyte & Mackay Ltd. Tomintoul Glenlivet was again incorporated as a limited company in 1985, and sold in 2000 to Angus Dundee, a bottling firm, whilst Fettercairn, W & S Strong, and Hay & MacLeod remained with Whyte and Mackay.
