Dr Gavin Shaw (1919-2007), Cardiologist

Gavin Brown Shaw was born in 1919. He graduated BSc from Glasgow University in 1939 and MB, ChB in 1942. He entered the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in 1943 and served until 1946. In his last year of service he practised as a Specialist in Laboratory Medicine. When he returned to civilian life, Shaw became Clinical Tutor in Medicine to the Regius Professor at Glasgow University, Sir John McNee. He was appointed Senior Registrar in Medicine at the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow in 1948 and Consultant Physician with duties in cardiology in 1956. He was promoted to Consultant Physician and Cardiologist in Charge of Wards in the Southern General in 1963. Dr Shaw’s main clinical interests have been in the field of cardiology. He has produced many scientific papers on topics such as coronary care and the use of pacemakers and sat on numerous committees regulating teaching and the orgainisation of courses. He has been an examiner in the MB, ChB Final Examination of Glasgow University and an examiner in cardiology and internal medicine for the MRCP in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. He has also served as a member of the National Medical Consultative Committee, its Executive, and its sub-committees for medicine. Dr Shaw was a member of Council of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from 1953 to 1957. He became Honorary Secretary in 1957, a post he held until 1965, and later returned to the Council for a second period between 1970 and 1974. Dr Shaw continued to serve on College committees until he was elected Visitor in 1976 and President from 1978 to 1980. Dr Shaw is a Fellow of all the Royal Colleges of Physicians in the U.K, and an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Physicians (1979) and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (1979). He was awarded an Honorary FRCPsych and Honorary FRCGP in 1980, the same year as he was awarded the CBE.
