The book The Modern Antaeus was written by Laurence Housman and published in 1900. Housman was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire on 18 July 1865. Initially educated at Bromsgrove School, he later attended Lambeth School of Art and the Royal College of Art with his sister Clemence. After his studies, be began working as a book illustrator but also published several volumes of poetry as well as some hymns and carols.
As his eyesight began to fail, Housman turned more towards his writing, producing a large body of work including several plays and novels. His oeuvre contained a wide range of genres from children's fairy tales to controversial plays featuring living members of the Royal family as characters. His political views were also somewhat controversial for the time, as Housman was a socialist, pacifist and co-founder of the Men's League for Women's suffrage.
Housman died on 20 February 1959.
