Life styles and patterns of mobility in Hertfordshire commuter villages

Scope and Content

The papers are stored in one archival box and are sorted into three folders. Folders one and two contain papers from Brickendon Lane Estate Mobility Study: Hand-written notes of brief interviews (30); 1 small notebook with hand-written notes giving impressions of interviews; 1 short week diary; assorted correspondence analysis and notes; folder three contains papers associated with the Survey of the Wife in the Family: assorted correspondence; 3 completed questionnaires; questionnaire schedule; draft research proposal.

Administrative / Biographical History

This small data set includes research material collected from two related projects: 'The Brickendon Lane Estate Mobility Survey', 1965 and the 'Survey of the Wife in the Family', 1964-65. These were both carried out as part of the activities of the University of Cambridge Extra Mural Studies Department. They can be seen to represent Professor Pahl's initial enquiries into topics given fuller consideration in his later study: 'Managers and their wives'.
