Administrative / Biographical History

Glasgow Nithsdale Society was established in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1869 . The Society's object was to promote friendly intercourse between people related to Nithsdale, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland , who now lived in Glasgow. They also sought to encourage education in the district through funding bursaries; other activities included providing financial aid to those residing in Glasgow from Nithsdale.

A committee of a president, 3 vice-presidents, a secretary, treasurer and 12 directors managed the Society. The committee was elected annually at the annual general meeting held on the second Friday of December. The director's met quarterly to invest the funds of the society in legal securities. The society's patron was the Duke of Buccleuch.

In December 1869 , the society amalgamated with the Glasgow Annandale Society who had similar objectives for the town of Annandale, Dumfries & Galloway, and also with the Glasgow Dumfriesshire Benevolent Society founded in 1869 . By this time, the Glasgow Nithsdale Society was managing a fund of å£157 with 80 members. The new society was called the Glasgow Dumfriesshire Society and adopted the constitution, aims and objectives of the former Nithsdale society but with support going to the people of Dumfriesshire (now part of Dumfries & Galloway).

By 1926 , the revised constitution stated that a minimum membership of 2 guineas was to be paid by all members and that the committee was to consist of an honorary president, honorary secretary, president, 7 vice-presidents, secretary, treasurer and 21 directors who met quarterly.

The Society established the Glasgow Dumfriesshire Social Club for its members in 1926 which "promoted social intercourse" between the Society members.

By 1937 , the Society was managing a fund of å£9432.

The Society is still in operation today (2007) and operates from an office in George Square, Glasgow.
